Advanced Specifications

There must be a "¼" margin between the edge of the label design and any important elements like text or logos. We do not recommend using any thin borders on the edge of the label for they may be cut off during the trimming process.

You may not add text to the image after it is uploaded. All text must be added to the label design before uploading it.

You may upload a CMYK file if you wish but it will not appear correctly on screen after you upload the image. However, it will print and look normal. RGB files print well and we recommend you use RGB format.

You may add a bleed to your label design. A bleed is extra image area added to each side of your design. This is necessary to assist in the cutting process. If you do not have a bleed and there are art elements too close to the sides of the label (text, logo, important people) there is a chance they may be cut off during the cutting process. Please, do not just add white space to the design or else your label will have a thin white border on the edge.

Adding wine information to your label design

Wine information will not be printed on your front label design. The wine information will appear on the registered back labels we are legally required to apply to the bottles. We recommend that you do not add wine information to your label designs.

However, if you want wine information on your label design, you must design the label for the wine you would like to order. Legally, the information you add to the label must read exactly as the wine brand, vintage, varietal and appellation does on our website.

If you order more than one wine and are adding the wine information to the label design, you will need to place separate orders for each wine and design separate labels for each wine you order. To view wines prior to designing your label and placing your order, click the "wine list" tab at the top of this page.

"Add Your Image" Labels

  • All images must follow our content guidelines.
  • Images must be Jpegs (jpg) files. (We do not accept .gif, .tif, .bmp, .ai, .eps, or .png.)
  • The minimum file size for uploaded images is 800 pixels on the shortest side. Images may be larger but not smaller. See specifications below for information on each label image area.
  • We recommend a 300 dpi jpeg in RGB format.
  • Maximum file size is 2.5MB (megabytes)
Advanced Specifications

The main part of the image (faces, logos or text) you want in the image area should be in the center of the image. Faces and heads of people should be in the center of the image and not near the top. For example, if you upload an image with heads near the top of the image then they may be cut off. We do not move or adjust the image to fit into the image area. How it appears on screen when the image is uploaded is how it will appear on the final label. If you are unhappy with how the image is placed on the label's image area, we recommend altering the image so it fits that label's image area to your satisfaction and re-uploading it, or choose another label template that better suits that image.

Troubleshooting

Things to check if image does not appear onscreen after upload:

  • Is the file in JPG format?
  • Is the file at least 800 pixels by 800 pixels?
  • Is the file in RGB or CMYK?
  • Is the file size larger than 2.5 megabytes?
  • If the file fits these criteria but still does not appear on screen, please resave the file and make sure it is an RGB JPG and the JPG is set to "Baseline Standard" JPG format.

Commonly used terms

What is DPI?
DPI stands for "dots per inch". These are the number of dots that are printed per inch. If your file is not high enough quality (a lower dpi) your image will have more "holes" in between the dots which causes it to look fuzzy. Using 300 dpi ensures that your image prints clear and sharp.

If you only have one file and it is too small, you will need to re-scan the original picture in order to upload the image so it looks clear when it is printed.

What is CMYK?
Short for Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black, and pronounced as separate letters. CMYK is a color model in which all colors are described as a mixture of these four process colors. CMYK is the standard color model used in offset printing for full-color documents. Because such printing uses inks of these four basic colors, it is often called four-color printing.

In contrast, display devices generally use a different color model called RGB, which stands for Red-Green-Blue. One of the most difficult aspects of desktop publishing in color is color matching -- properly converting the RGB colors into CMYK colors so that what gets printed looks the same as what appears on the monitor.

What is a Bleed?
A bleed is a part of a design or images that runs past the cutting line. A bleed allows for images to run up to the edge of a label without there being any unwanted white edge.

Using the Image Editor

The Signature Wines Image Editor is designed to help you fit your image the best way possible for the label you have selected. Each wine label has a specific image area that is pre-determined for that label. By using the Image Editor you can make sure the most important parts of your image appear on your selected wine label.

Rotate:
Use the rotate tool to position your image in the correct orientation. Use the drop down menus that appear above your image to "Flip" or "Rotate" your image into the position you would like it to appear on the label. If you need to perform more than one flip or rotation, you must select the rotate tool for each change in orientation.

Crop:
Use the crop tool to select the area of the image you want to appear on your wine label selection. Begin by selecting the crop tool and then click and drag your mouse over your image. A box should appear on your image with a grayed area around the unselected portion of your image. The proportion of the box is set to the proportion of the pre-determined image area for the label you have selected. To enlarge the selected image area, click on one of the boxes on the corners or sides of the selected area and drag your mouse to resize your selection. Click and drag inside the image area to move the box around your image to better select your desired image area. Once you have selected the part of the image you would like to appear on the label, click "OK" or if you want to begin cropping again, click "CANCEL".

Save:
When your image is ready to be placed on your label, click save and you will continue onto the next step.

Starting Over:
If you are still unsatisfied with the edits you've made, just click "start over" and the image will return to its original look.

Other helpful tips:

Sometimes, you may not be able to get your image to fit your label selection the exact way you want. In this case, you may want to select a different label option. Go ahead and select a new label design and you will return to the image editor to crop your image to best fit your new label option.

If you see the following message:

"Your selected area is smaller than the recommended 800x800 pixels. This will result in lower print-quality on your labels."

This warning is to help insure that you are putting the best quality image on your wine label. You may still continue using your image if this warning appears but you may be unsatisfied with the way the image prints on the finished labels.

If you want to upload a different image to your label selection, you must first crop and save the current image you have selected. In the next step, you will have the option again to upload an image. When you upload the new image, you will automatically return to the image editor.
